As a standalone film this isn't half bad. I saw it years before teh series was even commissioned and like it then. yes the TV series is more polished, but lets face it they have hours and hours to achieve the same ends. Rutger Hauer hams it up with some style, Donald Sutherland is no Giles but good as always (though not as good as he can be) and Kristy Swanson demonstrates far more attitude as Buffy than SMG was ever allowed to because this is where Buffy finds out she is the chosen one, where she wrecks her school (for the first time!) and is changed from popular into slayer...something series always alludes to, but never really demonstrates. This is a good film in it's own right and provides a good back story for some of the series plotlines. Definitely worth seeing.

This is not a great film by any measure, on the other hand it is not the worst I have ever seen. It's not a patch on the TV series, but will be interesting for hardcore buffy fans. There are numerous inconsistencies between the film and the start of the TV series (I think the biggest is that buffy doesn't get any older in the 4 or so years between the film and the TV series!). That's not really the point though, this was where it all began! There are definately a few "Joss" moments in the script, but it's not really laugh out loud funny like the TV series. It deserves a watch if you are a Buffy fan or have a couple of free hours where you don't really want to use your brain. You can get it from a marketplace seller for a couple of quid, and for that I would say it is worth it.

This film does rock. It was the original and only Buffy at the time, and although it got panned by the critics it developed a cult following, and then of course years later the Buffy we all know and love was developed from this.
This film is not meant to be taken seriously, the action scenes are well put together, and the acting is great, but it is only meant to be lighthearted fun - some of the lines from both Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry just prove this.
Nobody should really compare this with the current series as, it was a stand alone film, it gave a good insight to the beginnings of a great character, but to make a series work you have to make adjustments especially if you hope for it to run for series after series.
All in all great film, very funny, Luke Perry is to die for, definite modern classic.

this film's ok, not great. joss whedon himself was not happy with what hollywood had done to his idea and so he created the series. get them instead - better actors, script, etc.. sooo much better.

If this is the first time you've glanced at what to some is without doubt
a legend with the awesome Buffy the Vampire Slayer Seasons 1 to 7 series
then perhaps you're looking at the movie and thinking it might be a good
start before watching the series ?
Whilst this was written by Joss Whedon it can be said that those making this
movie should have been slain by Buffy for making such a total load of dross.
In short fans GIVE it a miss and skip to the full on Buffy the Vampire series
which won't let you down with such a thud or the desire to stake the producers
of the movie with such a vehemence ! believe me watch the movie and then the series
and you WILL be joining the queue to bin your copy of the movie !

If you have a pesky mole you may be marked for destiny.

Buffy (Kristy Swanson) is the end of a long line of failed vampire slayers. Merrick (Donald Sutherland) must teach her how to survive and do her duty. First he has a problem of convincing her that he is just not a weird old man.

Starts off slowly; soon we have a stake in the movie.

For people interested in technology more than the movie Blu-ray may add a little color to the movie but not one new gesture of word. Now if they had 3D with a blood squirter.
