Think of Viennese music, and one usually thinks of the Strauss family. Although I like Strauss well enough, I was looking for something different. Franz von Suppe, wrote more than fifty light operas, and only seems to be really known for the overtures from a handful of these - Light Cavalry, Poet and Peasant, Morning Noon and Night in Vienna, seem to be the best known. The Marches, Waltzes and Polkas, on this disc, show a side to the work of Franz von Suppe, that is rarely heard. The recordings are bright and musical, without being outstanding, but it's the music that really speaks for itself. This is all superbly elegant music, very much in the classic Viennese style, but also refreshingly different. Franz von Suppe, was a great melody maker who should be far better known for this type of music If you are looking for Viennese music, you won't be disappointed with this.
