I love this album. For me, Paco de Lucia's playing here is at its magical, spellbinding and thrilling best and the compositions are uniformly excellent (all composed by de Lucia himself). There is a fantastic sense of urgency and passion (even aggression at times) about this album and for me each piece is a work of superb writing artistry, drenched in atmosphere and charisma.
From the opening strains of 'La Canada' you know you are in for a treat: each track has a different mood but is united by the common thread of de Lucia's style - there is superb melody, great depth, emotion, brilliant technical virtuosity and elegance.
A particular favourite track of mine is number 6, 'Callejon del Muro', a beautiful and haunting composition featuring a tense early build up to a stunningly executed, super-fast descending C major scale pattern (one of many perfectly executed and thrilling virtuosic passages on the album).
A true work of art.

This 1994 album is regarded by many as Paco finest hour. Its the time when he came back to Flamenco after experimenting with other music forms with the likes of John Mclaughlin & Al Di Meola.
His virtuoso performance on this album took the music to a new level of perfection, away from the sweaty clubs of southern Spain and more into the Concert halls of the world.
His experiences seems to all come together on this album, and this has elevated the music and Lucia to more of an art form ,the music is stripped down and pure, and he has become the master of this form, with those huge hands both pounding and delicate in equal measure. All tracks self-penned, they are as follows:-
2.Mi Niño Curro
4.Caña de Azúcar
6.Callejón del Muro
8.Gloria Al Niño Ricardo
Other gems by Paco which are recommended if this pushes your button are Luzia and Cositas Buenas, but for starters this is the best.

I bought this as a cassette many years ago (attracted by the cover ??) and thought it OK if a little weird. Then I got very interested in Flamenco and bought loads of different Flamenco CD's.
Well I have changed taste now and moved on to different things but this album still shines as something fabulous and full of soul, innovative ideas, technique and brilliance - Flamenco plus. If you like Flamenco and do not own it I would recommend you make the purchase (I have seen Paco live and what a fantastic musician).
Thanks for reading.
