Sam Sparro has undeniably produced one of the most engaging and distinctive pop songs of the decade. The 80s-revival-electro-pop saturated music scene it sprang from has produced a fair amount of decent tunes, but nothing has come close in recent times to the lyrical substance of 'Black & Gold', it will be known as a marker in the development of pop music, whilst distinctly feeling like we've heard it before: Prince-like, if he had wanted continued commercial success? Madonna-like if she'd kept her more confessional/spiritual influences whilst remaining a mould breaker rather than a follower of trend? Perhaps neither. Perhaps its simply a one-off isolated perfect moment when pop music meets substance It's just SUCH a shame that the rest of his album is so rubbish!
