Brilliant in parts, heavy going elsewhere
on 28 September 2016
Although much admired by Stevie's fans over the years, personally I found some of the material here rather heavy going especially on the second half of the album involving worthy, but nevertheless important, political statements and 7 of the 17 tracks weigh in at a mighty 6 minutes or more. However, there are some classic cuts here which make this confection worth sticking with including 'Sir Duke', 'I Wish', 'Isn't She Lovely', 'Pastime Paradise' and the fabulously funky 'Contusion', which is probably the outstanding party piece of the whole package. Overall, I enjoyed this experience but I think the whole thing could have been compressed to a single album.
