Some Very Good Songs But A Mixed Bag Overall
on 15 January 2011
Typical that PJ's most praised album is also her least interesting. Very clearly a "New York" album much of it sounds like Patti Smith retreads - without any of the spark that Patti brought to her best records (more like retreads of Patti's 80's AOR sadly - at times you start expecting PJ to sing People Have The Power), for that blame the ultra-slick production and playing. On the plus side it is undoubtedly the easiest of her records to listen to, almost at times veering dangerously close to the sort of record that young married couples might own to show how hip they are. The songs are a mixed bag, This Is Love is interesting lyrically but oh-so dull musically. Kamikaze and The Whores.. veer into self parody. What saves this for me are three great songs, A Place Called Home, You Said Something and particularly the luminous We Float (the least typical and easily the best track here).
