Jonathan Tunick and The London Sinfonietta maintain the Broadway show-tune feel in this, the second of the four CDs by Kiri Te Kanawa singing songs from what has come to be known as the Great American Songbook. The CD was released in 1993 and the arrangements are all by Jonathan Tunick as well on this album. We have 14 lovely tracks of Jerome Kern melodies with several of the different lyricists with whom he worked - predominantly Oscar Hammerstein for `The folks who live on the hill', `The song is you', `All through the day', `All the things you are' and `Can't help lovin' that man'. Kern joined forces with Johnny Mercer for `I'm old fashioned'; with Dorothy Fields for `The way you look tonight' and `A fine romance'; and with Otto Harbach for the show Roberta which gave us `Smoke gets in your eyes' and `Yesterdays'. After the death of George Gershwin in 1937, Ira Gershwin joined up with Kern to compose `Long ago and far away' for the Gene Kelly and Rita Hayworth 1944 movie Cover Girl. The CD cover and enclosed booklet give the lyrics to all the songs and the shows from which they are derived.
