What a thing this is. Anyone who misses Woolworths should buy this! As a young Elvis fan I learned lots about the other side of Elvis from these old Camden LPs (or cassettes in my case). A good album? No, this is probably one of the worst albums if not the worst in the Camden series! Great memories? Yes! This series is also a really good introduction to the more obscure movie songs. I'm a bit retro really and would love to give it 5 stars for merely existing, but I'll show restraint at 3!
By the way, the original title was: "Elvis Sings Hits from his Movies Plus Two Recent Hits" check your local charity shop.

This album was released by RCA's budget arm Camden Records in 1972. The aim was to make Elvis accessible to all and shift some of his less memorable songs. And that was done with a flashy album cover and a couple of fairly good songs. Oh and a rock bottom price to make sure the people bought it. And they did - by the million!

And how else could they have sold some of the tracks on this album? The album eventually achieved platinum sales! Surely not because it had DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE, or HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE, or FRANKIE AND JOHNNY, all average movie songs. It even had OLD MACDONALD (who had a rocking farm ee ya ee ya - and yo). Not even the two brilliant non-movie tracks GUITAR MAN and BIG BOSS MAN could have helped it sell the million plus copies it did (these two tracks were originally bonus tracks on the CLAMBAKE movie soundtrack album.)

No. It was the high gloss flashy cover and the small change in your pocket that made you buy the album - even if you weren't an Elvis fan. An on-stage shot of a jump-suited Elvis looking his best framed in shocking pink certainly drew you to take a closer look. And then you saw the even more attractive price! But the album cover did not reflect the songs at all - far from it.

The effect of this marketing was two-fold. On the positive, it made Elvis Presley affordable and accessible to almost everyone. On the other hand, it creased his larger than life image a little with some of the eight mediocre movie tracks. So when the new and casual music buyers got home and played this album, most filed it appropriately after one listen, and probably never bought another Presley album. But Camden Records and RCA got your £1 and that's what mattered in their blinkered marketing. (They would not dare do that today)

Still, it's not a bad idea for serious fans to include this album in their collection - at least for nostalgic reasons.
