Authentic? Well, yes, as the other reviewer here on Amazon has said, this is supremely French music performed by French musicians and recorded at a time when there still existed a measure of the characteristic sound of French orchestras that the composer himself might have recognised.

Jean Martinon had returned from a not especially happy term as chief conductor of the Chicago Symphony and it is to be much regretted that he died far too soon to be able to work more with this and other orchestras in France following his return from the United States.

This comprehensive collection of many Twentieth century orchestral masterpieces, all created by that magician, Maurice Ravel, is offered at a bargain price. Do not hesitate.

I liked it a lot. Even an evergreen like the Bolero. Very good performance. This piece of music is so often abused (can you use this term for music?) in movies, it is often difficult to listen to it again. Not this time. And the other pieces are beautifull as well. Perhaps the right match; French composer & French orchestra.

This is a great set of 3 cd's with many hours of music on it. I must confess to buying it for Bolero and Pavane, mainly but have enjoyed the other pieces greatly. The music quality is fantastic and I was pleased to see the 14+ minute version of Bolero which was outstanding. For the price, this CD is amazing- really worth it.

Superb. Superb Superb. "What does it matter what you say about people? He was some kind of a man." Ravel - you had it, and you gave it.
Recording fab.

Ravel wrote some of the most attractive "classical" music of the 20th century and this brilliantly played collection includes nearly all of his orchestral works .

Years ago, this was a huge LP box set, coupled with debussy. It set the standard then, and is still the benchmark for this music. One of the best EMI stereo recordings of its time,it still sounds as good(even better, really)in the CD incarnation.
No other matches this, and being played by Frenchmen, suffice it to say it's in their blood.
Don't hesitate,it's a steal at any price.
