This is one of those CDs that makes your spine tingle and the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Incredible, 'other-worldly' voices that transport you. The whole CD has a mystical, spiritual quality that is so arresting and haunting - really exceptional, extremely moving and beautifully performed and produced.

The 1982 album A feather on the breath of God by Gothic Voices and featuring Emma Kirkby kicked off a bit of a craze for recordings of the music of 12th century polymath nun Hildegard von Bingen, and this, the first of a project by Stevie Wishart to record all of Hildegard's compositions, is definitely among the best, neither too insipid on the one hand nor too New-Agey on the other - vivacious and also convincing.

Stevie herself, also playing hurdy-gurdy on some tracks, appears as a vocalist alongside a talented team including Vivien Ellis, Jocelyn West (one of the founders of Miranda Sex Garden), Julie Murphy, Vickie Couper and several members of the Oxford Girls Choir.

Full Latin sung texts are included along with English translations.

For anyone who appreciates sublime choral female singing this is a fantastic example of the genre.
12th Century or not, its still absolutely relevant to any lover of this type of music.
Thoroughly recommended.

Enjoy Nick
