Great and interesting Weapons
7 March 2015
FEAR 2 had the unfortunate fate of being released at the same time as Modern Warfare 2. It did not stand a chance commercially.
However FEAR 2 is a solid FPS and should not be ignored by fans of the genre. It contains an interesting story - inspired more by J-Horror and Anime than western horror. Great and interesting Weapons. Brilliant Enemy AI.
Also this game is nice for immersion - the game generally lets you get on with it and allows you the time and breathing room to explore the environments. The level design is ace - the game does not use waypoint markers or highligted routes - yet you always seem to know where to go. There are a couple of light "platforming" sections as you attempt to navigate the various levels. This game does not bombard you with button prompts or tutorial tips so you get easily immersed. This helps especially on some of the more creepier stages.
My enjoyment of the game was amplified by the fact that I felt the game treated me like an adult and not a moron. I will give two examples to illustrate this :
1. You meet an incredibly fast attacking melee enemy that can move on walls and ceilings - It is nearly impossible to hit them with out using your bullet time ability - The game never tells you this - It never stops the action and tells you to engage bullet time - not a single character pops up telling you "Hey maybe you might be able to use your bullet time " . Nada - The game expects you to figure it out.
2. There are sections where you control Mechs - They can take a beating but if you are not careful they can be badly damaged and destroyed - All the Mechs contain a self repair ability - again the game does not tell you this or advise you of this - You are expected to observe the environment and the enemy actions - through this there is a chance you will notice the enemy Mechs engaging their self repair and how it is done.
Also the game is very gory and violent and the weapons all feel great and pack a great punch - Using a shotgun point blank range will explode a guy. Its very satisfying. Some will complain this is not as scary or creepy as the first but I would posit this game is supposed to be the "Aliens" to FEARs "Alien".
