I liked this 102 min REGION B/2 DVD in a strange way, but it is not a film I would recommend to a friend or discourage them from watching. Some violence, little bad language and no adult scenes.
Held in an L.A. interrogation room, Verbal Kint (Spacey) attempts to convince the feds that a mythic crime lord not only exists, but was also responsible for drawing him and his four partners into a multi million dollar heist that ended with an explosion in San Pedro Harbour - leaving few survivors. As Kent lures his interrogators into the incredible story of this crime lords almost supernatural prowess, you maybe mesmerised by a lore that is completely captivating from beginning to end.

Brilliant modern "film noir", with a superb cast from an original screenplay. Won't give the plot away, min case you haven't seen it, but enough to say it is a convoluted, but gripping tale of 5 criminals brought together to do a job by a mythical underworld figure, keyser soze ("Ky-zerr So-say") and told retrospectively by an "unreliable narrator" (Kevin Spacey). Great main cast, who work superbly together as an ensemble. Highly recommended. Honestly. Watch it.
(Also an added bonus for nerds, like me, who have watched it MANY times, it's interesting to watch and pick out which bits of the story you can be sure are "true" and which parts may not be!)

In addition to the film itself, Disc 1 carries 2 audio commentaries. The first with John Ottman and the second with Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie.
Disc 2 contains;
1. Pursuing the usual suspects (23 mins)
2. Doin' time with the usual suspects (26 mins)
Behind the scenes interviews with the director and all the cast
3. " Keyser soze: lie or legend" featurette (18mins)
Focus on keyser soze. Includes interview with Spacey.
4. Introducing the usual suspects: featurette (6 mins)
Extended trailer for movie
5. Heisting Cannes with the usual suspects: featurette (4 mins)
footage of showing at Canne film festival
6. Bryan Singer's "gag reel" (5 mins)
Out-takes and a few inside gags

One of my favourite films. I originally had the Region 1 DVD but it's too much of a faff to keep changing the region, so when I saw this advertised for less than £3 it was a no-brainer.

The film is just as good as I remembered, Kevin Spacey is brilliant (deserved Oscar winner), but the whole ensemble cast is good. There are more plot twists than a politician's promises and the even though I knew the reveal it was still good to watch.

A note about the discs themselves and the supplier (ReNew Entertainment) . This was listed as "New" but clearly wasn't: there were fingermarks and scratches on the playing surface. It played perfectly though, so for less than £3 I wasn't going to complain. I mentioned this in my supplier review and Declan at ReNew immediately refunded me the purchase price even though I hadn't asked and also offered me a free item as a goodwill gesture. You can't fault Customer Service like that and I would happily buy from ReNew again.

The 'Usual Suspects' is one of those classic movies that has defined a genre, and my Special Edition DVD bought in 2005 still has the ability to grab our attention and draw us into the subtleties of the plot. At first sight it is a simple revenge movie, but there is so much more to it, and each repeat viewing reveals more detail that was missed on previous occasions.

I don't know how often we have watched it now, but the Az blurb listing the content and extras is to the point, and I am glad we have this DVD in our collection. All the cast offer us superb performances, including the supporting actors. The picture quality is good enough in mere standard definition on a 40" screen with almost no hop weave or grain that one does not feel the need for HD, especially since the action is far more important than taking the time to look for any specks of dust on someone's clothes. The surround sound feels natural and well balanced, making the experience feel real, we are there - the fly on the wall..

Recommended.

"The Usual Suspects" is a film with an astonishing plot. To remain aware of what is going on, looking away from the screen for even a second is inadvisable. Despite the story line being saturated with information it is an enjoyable movie to watch. Due to the disjointed skipping between time lines, particularly in the beginning, it can be a little difficult to become immersed but I would say that it is worth the wait. As the plot unfolds it is increasingly captivating. What else made this film so exceptional is the cast performance. Kevin Spacey was stunning as Verbal Kint and he added a real depth to the character. The other criminals were also made particularly believable in the eyes of the audience by the actors, and Nolan was particularly easy to empathise with.

That being said, I was disappointed by the quality of the upscale. This is not what I would term 'high definition' by any stretch of imagination. The picture quality wasn't bad, but it lacked the distinctive sharpness and crystal clear nature of most blu-ray films and DVD to BR conversions. Also, the picture on the sleeve was reminiscent of that on a pirate copy- that is to say, dreadful.

Complaints aside, it was an entertaining film and well worth watching for anybody interrested in criminal thrillers.

This review applies only to the two disk special edition (ASIN:B000063BM9). Both the picture and sound are superb. The average bitrate is an excellent 8237kbps. The extras DVD has loads of great stuff on it.

This is a great crime/mystery/thriller movie. It reminds me of a Tarantino movie, which is no bad thing. The plot is easy to follow, but has many twists and turns to keep you interested. The suspense holds up right until the end.

When a ship explodes in california only two survivors are found. An eastern European mobster and a small time conman called Kint. The mobster can only say Keyser Söze, so the investigating officer decides to lay into Kint to find out what happened. After a while Kint comes clean and tells him an incredible and strange story about how he and some others were forced into working for the mysterios Keyser Söze to make amends for having transgressed against him. A great story with superb acting and many twists

This modern day film noire directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie was along with Se7en the most talked about and argued about films of 1995, with its convoluted plot and intricate wordplay where every word spoken could be a clue to the plot that enfolds in front of your eyes and ears, my friends and I were talking about the climax of this movie for days.

The cast of superb actors which includes Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro and Stephen Baldwin the scenes that include all these players are nothing short of a master class in acting where all the player concerned play off each other with great effect.

This masterpiece of cinema deservedly won the best screenplay Oscar and best supporting actor Oscar for the wonderful Kevin Spacey in 1995.
The film is a modern day classic with all the elements of great film making coming together and are presented in this DVD in 2.35:1 aspect and superb 5.1 surround sound a true must have for your collection.

If you haven't seen it you should.... how have you not seen this film yet? Really? Just don't read any spoilers first because it really will ruin one of the best movies of all time for you. If you have seen it, watch it again. You can always get a bit more from it I find.

Why are you still reading this.

Just watch the film already.

Kevin Spacey is an acting legend.

Superbly acted, superbly written, superbly shot, this film is a classic already. Without doubt one of the best films in the gangster/heist genre - clever, compelling and chilling. So much pleasure to be derived from watching it again and again. Top notch.
