Recorded in 8 July 1961, Royal Festival Hall, ADD. Sound quality is not so bad, only back ground hiss noise and one audience coughing as if dying from consumption during the performance of Haydn Sonata No.44 - I can not comprehend why anyone can cough while a small miracle is taking place. The most of BBC Legend series are disgraceful record of how disrespectful British audiences were to the master (his Schubert recital for example, which is completely ruined by coughing campaign!).

Fortunately, coughing gradually subsides after Prkofiev's 2nd Sonata, which is one of most electrifying and exquisite performances by Richter, if not the most daring. Vision fugitive and Legends are played with equally breath taking tonal colouring and delicacy. Sonata No.8 is definitely one of finest performances among the nine recordings by the master as far as I know. Slow sections are played with incredible sensitivity and fast passages are just awesome! Audiences are spell-bound at this stage and no more coughing thankfully. The applause just explodes after the last notes.

The brilliant account of the 8th sonata alone can make this CD well worth purchasing, but coupled with very fine Haydn Sonata and outstanding account of three more works by Prokofiev, this is a must-by for any collectors!

I've listened to DG, Revelation, and other recordings of Prokofiev's 8th sonata, played by Richter, but I find this one by BBC Legend is the finest performance.
