Not for hanging bird feeders
16 June 2017
I've had one of these for three months before writing a review, so this is after a season's use. Well...it keeps the squirrels off; I mounted it over a hanging bird feeder in a tree like an umbrella, hoping that it would keep off the squirrels and help keep the bird food dry. Both of these it does splendidly: so why the three star rating? The birds hate it. I think they are afraid of its reflective quality, I've tried it in a couple of positions but the birds almost entirely ignore the feeder when the baffle is in place. Within ten minutes of removing it and going back inside they are back to their normal to-ing and fro-ing, so I'm entirely convinced it is the baffle they dislike. It could be different for people with pole-mounted feeders with the baffle underneath, so if you have one of these ignore this review, but for hanging bird feeders, you might want to give this a miss.
It's not a complete waste however, this is a large and sturdy plastic dome, and my intention is to attach a wooden handle to the mounting hole and use it as a cloche! You could, if you hadn't ever used it outside, press it into service as a large (40cm diameter) food cover as long as you fill the mounting hole in. This is a good quality item, and I was trying to use it in a way not entirely intended, but I'm surely not the only person who needs to keep marauding squirrels off a hanging bird feeder.
