First off lets get this out of the way, this is NOT their second album, nor have the band ever claimed otherwise, it's an E.P (granted it's quite a long one, an extended E.P you might say) i guess people have assumed it's an album due to it being 10 tracks long and for those who have heard it, perhaps the fact it that it sounds good enough to be a second album. Without changing the formula too much from 'Hold On Now, Youngster' This record certainly shows promise that LC! are evolving and growing as a band. 'Ways to Make it Through the Wall' and 'Miserabilia' are the sounds of a band that has massively grown in confidence. The title track along with 'You'll Need Those Fingers For Crossing' are instantly loveable and classic LC! The most pleasing track to find on here and further evidence of progression of their sound is 'Heart Swells/Pacific Daylight Time' a song in two parts much like bands such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Super Furries and Modest Mouse among others have toyed with, it's a beautiful song with heartfelt lyrics, 'I wish that you would kiss me 'til the point of paralysis' sings Gareth, and musically it's different to anything they've done before. Overall this is an excellent record brimming with confidence and some of their best work to date showing they are capable of quality as well as quantity. It all bodes very well for their second album which i'm looking forward to even more now.
This is a great album and gets better with each listen, much like their first LP "hold on now youngster". The packaging is lovely and the DVD okay. It would have been nice to have included some videos of old or new tracks or include more live performance, however it's a good inclusion.
If you are into LC then this ain't no B side album /EP, whatever. What are you waiting for? It will bring a smile to your face.
Slightly ridiculous (although very emotional) lyrics, the kind of thing many people can relate to, I like this one in particular from 'It's never that easy though, is it?' "As if I walked into the room to see my ex-girlfriend, Who by the way, I'm still in love with Sucking the face of some pretty boy with my favourite band's most popular song in the background Is it wrong that I can't decide which bothers me most? In the forefront of my mind it's the thought not of you underneath, but me coming out looking worse"
Ontop of that, catchy melodies, original assortment of instruments... Saw them live at Reading festival, a couple of years ago, loved 'em, and only just got round to getting this album.
Another overlooked gem. Los Campesinos are one of the few bands to have a score of over 80 -or Universal Acclaim - on Metacritic for their albums ( only 2 so far admittedly), yet they still struggle to shift units or sell out the Thekla in Bristol. What's going on ? Probably the Twee tag hasn't helped, nor Amazon and the like still lablling the songs as "cheerful and fun". Superb twisted lyrics and a few cheeky nods to Pavement on a couple of tracks. Next album out soon, and once I've finished paddling in the fountain I'll be off to buy.
This is such an incredible album, by a mind-blowingly, ball-tinglingly fresh, fun band! The band are incredible live and, having met them in July, really great people. A truly inspirational, great band.
