This is a fabulously rich release of music by British composer Laurie Johnson. There are actually three different releases by this record company Demon-Edsel. The other two uses the tag of the TV series "The Avengers" and "The New Avengers".
This is volume two and here on this three CD set we get a variety of music by Laurie Johnson.

Laurie Johnson has composed a wealth of music. He is famous as a composer of music for film and TV. But he is also famous for composing for Big Band, Classical concert hall, military and state occasions.
After composing music for the TV series The Avengers in the 1960s and then music for other shows such as Animal Magic, Jason King, and Wickers world, he wrote music for the New Avengers in the 1970s. Both the Avengers and the New Avengers had been produced by Fennel and Clemens and as the New Avengers came to a close they moved on to produce a new show called The Professionals. The brought in Laurie Johnson to compose the music thus continuing the winning formula of producer and composer.
Johnson composed music for the individual episodes that lasted for four series.

Disc one is dedicated to the music he composed for the TV series "The Professionals". It is a good disc with great music. I do think that they could have included more music. When you consider that there were four series there must be more that they could have used. However any release is welcome. The music is fabulous. The musicians that helped to produce these recordings also did a great job and the compositions are rich, melodic, dramatic and exciting. The music to the Professionals is brilliant. And the arrangements are wonderful.
The booklet gives interesting details about the episodes that the music is taken from. This truly is a terrific release.

Music for TV and Film is often ignored as serious music. Possibly because of the nature of the music being a backdrop to the visual element. But the music is an important part of these films and TV shows because they are often the crucial things that create the atmosphere of the piece.
In the case of The Avengers the music was especially commissioned for this series. Composers like Edwin Astley, Barry Grey and Laurie Johnson created some very original music and deserve to be respected as serious composers. Laurie Johnson has his own unique style.

Disc two is also interesting with a wide variety of music on it. This includes music for TV and films, concert hall and military. The best disc is the first one and it is worth buying this set just for that alone. until the day there is a more complete release of the music for The Professionals this release is a welcome addition to the music of Laurie Johnson. All of the recordings are the original recordings for the TV series and same goes for the misic on the other two discs.
This release if a very good issue of the music of Laurie Johnson.

About the only criticism that I can make of this set - the second in the series of Laurie Johnson recordings - is that the first disc, which is slections of music score from THE PROFESSIONALS tv series, is in mono only. It's a shame, but a minor criticism.

This set is a great overview once more of Laurie Johnson's varied output, but I think it will be THE PROFESSIONALS that is the big draw here, as the contents of the other two CDs in the set consist in the main of previously-released material. But, its all GOOD material, featuring a selection of Johnson's feature film scores, and some of his best known theme tunes. His concert hall in particular is always worth hearing- mixing jazz and classic in the inimitable Laurie Johnson style.

And to cap it all, 78 minutes of music from THE PROFESSIONALS. 70's TV scoring at its funkiest. If you like noodling electric guitars, plenty of bass guitar and some very deep and punchy drums, liberally flavoured with brass and latin percussion, this music is for you.

I very much hope THE NEW AVENGERS is next in line for this treatment, but I hope too that Mr Johnson and the Edsel team can maybe give us another volume of THE PROFESSIONALS as well.

Copious notes complete the package in well illustrated booklets. 3 discs for an extremely reasonable price. Highly recommended.

I had a vinyl album some years ago that featured music from the Professionals and the New Avengers, but this is pure class. The sound quality is excellent although as already stated is in mono. I don't think there would have been much point to recording in stereo as the music would only end up on the soundtrack of a 16mm optical film print. Anyway I purchased this just for the Professionals music and I'm not at all disappointed - it's got all my favourite pieces on, so the other two CD's are a bonus and the price is just brilliant, I don't know how they make any money.

Anyone who grew up with Bodie and Doyle on TV - as I have - will love this edition. It includes over 70 minutes of all the music used on the professionals. Not only the major theme but all background and mood music as well. Best thing: It does not get boring because you will instantly picture individual episodes while listening to the soundtrack. I am really thankful for this first cd. However I could have done without the other two in this 3-cd-package, since they cover other music of Laurie Johnson.

I would like to buy this set of CDs but nearly 200 pounds is way, way too much too ask.

I mainly bought this CD because of the music to the "professionals" series, and what a bad surprise to realise that the recording is in mono and that it has the quality level of bad mp3's... therefore i don't need to buy the CD... sorry, although i love the music, i don't need music in that poor recording quality... :-(
