ahh where to start.. this is a fantastic offering by the late great randy california and crew , I write as someone who was fortunate to see randy at the ' night of the guitars ' in liverpool way back in 1988 ( ish ) , already conversant with the works of spirit at the time , i was entranced with the sounds that he produced. this triple cd comes from the previous decade, when spirit were stripped down to a three piece or as the term is commonly used ' power trio ' and quite a muscular outfit they were.. A lot of the songs feature twice, but let that not put you off , you will be entranced by the echoplex layering and route one driving rock , with some fuzz bass and the driving elder statesman of mr skin thumping the tubs behind the magnificient one with the hair.. some of the songs do miss the brss arrangement , ie like the song ' mr skin ' but hell this is the raw live sound , not the studio stuff , please rest assured you will love this set , and at such a reasonable price you simply can't go wrong..
A real treat for Spirit - Randy California/ Ed Cassidy fans.. a huge selection from a great touring period. If you loved the original live lps from this era which introduced me (via the 45" "Nature's way/ Stone Free") -you will love this 3cd box set-fabulaus. Well worth it -as are all the later albums. They had fabulous reviews from the Reading Festival theyplayed at the time with loads of encores!
This is the same 3-piece Spirit that recorded the Live At The Rainbow album, with Larry "Fuzzy" Knight on bass, and consists of two sides of live recordings and one side of studio cuts. There's some repetition of songs, and some variation in recording quality, but for fans of the band in this period there are plenty of real bonuses, including the studio recordings of Rock and Roll Planet, Zandu and Hollywood Dream, as well as some previously unheard originals and alternate versions. A treasure, but for serious fans only!
Being a Spirit fan and having seen them during this period I find this offering very poor. The quality is terrible and takes away any slight enjoyment I got from it I will not be playing it again: it seems pointless in hindsight anyhow bearing in mind I already have Live In Germany and Live at the Rainbow on vinyl. I was hoping for much more and would avoid this unless you are happy with poor bootleg quality.
