Fastlane hit the small screen back in 2002/2003 with little to no fanfare, it seemed to just go literaly under the radar. I was in my movie and T.V. snob phase at the time and didn't give it much attention deeming it too low-brow.
Thankfully I have since gotten over myself! The show kept poping up on late night t.v. repeats over the years and this is when I took real notice and gave it a chance. If you can get over what initially seems to be the style over substance (and there is a LOT of style) on show here one realizes that the strength of this show is it's storylines and the three main characters interactions with each other - three undercover cops in L.A. who have love/hate relationships with each other.
That's what makes the show work for me anyway and the fact that the villians they go up against are usually genuinely threatening leading to some tense situations. Overall it's just a lot of fun spending time with the main characters, being in this OTT stylised world they inhabit and seeing their relationships develop. It's funny at times, dramatic at others and sometimes actually kind of touching.
It's not a show that's going to appeal to everyone but I think most guys and some girls would enjoy relaxing after a hard days work by watching some fastlane.
The DVD is Region 1 encoded(USA) but does actually work on European DVD players. Unfortunately quite a bit of the original soundtrack had to altered due to licensing costs but if you can get past this frustration it's great to finally have this show on DVD after all this time.
If you liked Miami Vice and if you liked Fast & Furious, you'll love this. It's flashy, glamorous, action packed etc. Okay, so it only ran one series in the US - apparently it was costly to produce (production values were high), but the network put it out in a slot that was never going to guarantee high ratings which US TV is all about. Peter Facinelli is always worth watching, and there's great cameos to look out for; Isaac Hayes, Iggy Pop...
I was expecting the usual testosterone based frantic action but this series is so much more. There is loads of action shot with really classy camera work and enough excitment to keep anyone happy. There is also depth and colour to the characters with wonderful humour and interplay between the main cast and there are some unusually thoughtful and thought provoking twists. Peter Facinelli and Bill Bellamy are unbelievebly good at both playing and breaking the stereo types of undercover cops. They play Van and Deak with amazing energy, enthusiasm and lightness of touch. We end up really caring about these characters! A fabulous series what a pity there aren't more!!
Bought this set because I'd heard good things about the show from friends. I had to send the first box set back because I kept on getting periods where the screen would flicker from picture to blank screen or the picture would fracture. Got a replacement with the same problem. Not impressed.
