Little story, but with good cinematography and acting.
However the lack of story and character development leaves the viewer feeling cheated and wondering why they spent the time watching this.
Ray Winston and Emily Watson do their best, but there's not enough to save.
Don't be fooled by the trailer - its better than the film - the word at the forefront of my mind when I'd finished watching this was TRIPE!

One of the finest films ever made in australia, one of the best ever.Aviolent film that shows the ultimate futility and waste of violence.Their is so much that is good about this film, the acting, what it says about culture clash, and its so sad, especially at the climax.Loosely based on colonial australia,it is just so unhollywood.5 out of 5.

There's not much more I can add to the 5-star reviews already here, except to summarise: beautiful cinematography, excellent direction, believable performances from the stellar cast, incredible and portentous dialogue oozing with subtext. If you don't like strong, upsetting and realistically portrayed violence, then give this one a miss; one of the main themes of this film is the brutality of life in the British colonies of the 19th century.

Works particularly well on Blu-ray, with both Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio soundtracks to chose from in addition to the basic Dolby Digital 5.1. Picture quality is an equally stunning VC-1 transfer; not quite the showpiece of your home cinema set-up, but that's more because of the filming style.

I think possibly Ray Winstones finest film, his character is superb and he plays it well. Although a very violent film, lots of blood about, its a very watchable film that keeps you guessing about the outcome. All acting is brilliant, its a long time since I enjoyed a good film like this.

Really a nasty piece of a movie. But nevertheless great. And moving.

There is quite a lot of brutal scenes; they never appear to be voyeuristic, however, as they are necessary to convey the upleasant circumstances the caracters find themselves in. The cast is plainly wonderful. Especially Ray Winston is wonderful.

Highly recommendable
