As a fan of Eddie Izzard, my initial interest in watching '40' was in him. Not long into the dvd I was hooked by the affective performances of the quality, ensemble cast--I cannot know if this was contributed to by most being unfamiliar (my being in the US).
'40' blends dark comedy with deep pathos, and soap-opera theatrics with stark reality. The revelations of particular characters shadowed me long after the show had ended. I've read that there are no new stories, only new ways to tell the old ones. The old story '40' tells in a new way, I believe, is that there are no absolutes--everyone has a portion of angel and a portion of devil and it is rarely readily apparent which is greater.

I was also turning 40 when this shown (was it ever repeated?)and I finally tracked it down on dvd. Really good dark drama with great performances all round. Jo Anne Whally is still super sexy but is very weird in this!

An off kilter drama that only the british could make (repression, anger, resentment)

It's hit and miss. Personally, I enjoyed it and have watched it more than once however, I can understand why others may not like it. The acting is altogether well done and believable. The script, on the other hand is a bit more difficult to believe. It is an overall good story and I would say is worth a watch.

An excellent sexually tense"FILM 4 "drama concerning a school reunion years after they had all gone their separate ways.So they have all got stories to tell after all those years apart. Each group has problems within their own relationships both with their current partner but also with past memories and tensions being suddenly stirred with those they meet at the reunion. This causes all kinds of new problems within the group and arguments start has tensions rise and things begin fall apart."EDDIE LIZARD" is the main actor in this drama and is brilliant in his role has a high flyer businessman who does not give a damn about anything or any body that he is involved with;quite ruthless,

not porn but definitely adult. Well acted, but the pace drags a bit. An odd group of primary school friends who end up meeting again as they hit "that time" in life and question some of the ways they got there. Would not have made it as a series, but not bad in three episdoes.
