Just not enough story to go around......
on 7 May 2017
A group of four twenty somethings travel to PNG hoping to find the legendary lost Michael Rockefeller and share in a one million dollar reward. As they get further into the jungle, they find they are in a much more dangerous situation than they ever imagined.
This is a nice film to look at, with lots of green jungle, rivers and waterways, so having a Blu-ray copy is an advantage, however the soundtrack is not lossless but instead just a Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. Even so, this suits the material well enough.
The story starts out reasonably well introducing the characters and giving some of them some backstory. None of them however are particularly likeable so I found I didn't care too much about what happened to them. There is a lot of time spent actually getting to PNG and then once they get there there are a number of diversions which pad the story out somewhat before getting to the real reason for their trip which is to get to Irian Jaya in search of Mr Rockefeller. Unfortunately things go downhill quite a bit as the relationships between the two couples deteriorates quickly and the film spends about 45 minutes showing them bickering and carrying on like 12 year olds. It becomes very wearing after a while and it just feels like the filmmakers have done this to wring some more time out to make the feature run time required. After the fighting phase comes the screaming phase, and although the pace picks up, by this time it's clear what lies in store.
The ending of the film does draw everything together (rather predictably) and doesn't leave too many questions unanswered.
It's not a bad viewing experience but it really needed a secondary story to keep the interest going.
