The combination of his mesmerising voice, fresh clean instrumental accompaniment to candid words make this a compelling album to listen to time and time again. There is a certain quality to Hayes' music which I can only describe as "pulling you back down to earth". The songs' instrumentation varies from the clean and simple trio of double bass, drums and guitar, to the more exotic and unusual combinations including woodwind and brass (did I hear bass clarinet in there? and a soprano sax and trombone?). The songs go from foot tapping blues/folk to the hauntingly cathartic and difficult to classify. I think that's the point, you can't categorise this music and that's what makes it always sound fresh.
