Rule Number 1:
Only pay attention to customer reviews who have owned the machine for a while not the ones who write them after 1 week of receiving the machine.
Unfortunately for me I guess I used to own a Jura bean to cup machine which somebody bought for me so this was a step down, Sadly it died after 3 years and was uneconomical to repair. What is it with coffee machine reliabilty?
I've owned the Gaggia Baby for about 3 months. The flow rate has almost come to a standstill. I already use filtered water and I regularly descale it. The frother is so inconsistent, you either get amazing froth or warm milk. The machine constantly drips and overflows all these issues highlighted by other users.
I hate the way the machine produces inconsistent coffee. I've been resisting going down the Nespresso route purely because of the hideous cost of the capsules compared to buying beans but I love the wonderful simplicty of it and consistency of the coffee it produces and the Aerocinno is amazing...

This machine produces excellent coffee and does a good job of steaming milk. It's generally easy to use too.

Gripes:

1. The ridiculous gloss black finish to most surfaces is inevitably going to get scratched and spoil the appearance. Gloss black is bad enough on surfaces that are largely untouched, such as TV bezels, but on items that get handled it really is very silly. People moan about problems keeping stainless steel looking smart but gloss black is worse and much more easily damaged. It's a shame the 'Baby Class' is so much more expensive.

2. The instructions are poor, especially for anyone who buys this as a first espresso maker. The main instruction book (there are two supplementary sheets because they didn't want to update the main book) refers to things by multiple names, so you aren't confident about which particular part they refer to. It gives instructions for certain procedures in more than one place and they are contradictory, and also contains obvious errors, e.g. step 5 in "Making hot water" where it says "...and put the switches to 'on' and can be released". The English is very dodgy in places too.

Having said all that, at the low pre-Christmas price paid, I don't regret buying...as long as it proves reliable (this is my third espresso maker and they've all failed within a fairly short time).

I'm not sure it works any better than the £40 machine a friend bought from Lidl, however. The Lidl one has a 3-year guarantee which, from what I read, is honoured without argument. If you aren't in a hurry, you might do well to wait until next time it's available (sign up for the Lidl email to get notified of weekly offers). I should add that, like the Gaggia, it has a gloss black finish, and it does LOOK cheaper.

I never used the machine much.
After about 5 months it started spitting water and steam out all over the place through the coffee dispenser.
I recently bought a new cradle for it but that hasn't fixed the problem.
So, now I'm left with a rather expensive kitchen ornament.

This is probably the de facto standard for all manual espresso machines. A bit expensive for what it is, but it does everything it should. Needs quite a lot of cleaning if used regularly (and mine is) - but then they all do to some extent. This is a very hard water area, so regularly descaling/cleaning is a must - in a soft water area it would be much less work.

This is, as my pre-purchase research showed, a first class product that is easy to use and produces very tasty coffee. The downside is that I now spend much more time entertaining spontaneous callers as they know how good the coffee is!!!!!!

Love the machine and the customer service from Caffe Shop Ltd has been faultless. I had very minor issues with the steam wand that were beyond their control and they have sorted everything in no time at all cant recommend them enough.

This machine is neat and compact. Very fast in operation and delivering excellent espresso coffee.
However the filter holder has a removable valve which is all too easy to mislay. All it takes is careless disposal of the spent coffee grounds and hey presto the valve is lost. Having said that the controls are sensible and the coffee is as good as any shop, and better than most! I have no hesitation in recommending this machine and the competitive price is a bonus.

The closest you can get to professional espresso machine! So far 6 months without a problem. A little bulky, but I am OK.
I would recommend to use with proper (in terms of flavour and level of grinding) espresso coffee - e.g. Lavazza rossa.

Have no idea why the power switch is at the back, but ...it's OK.

Very neat machine which doesn't take up nearly as much space on the worktop as my old Dualit coffee maker. It also works much better and produces excellent coffee. A lot of domestic machines don't froth very efficiently but this one does and it heats the coffee effectively too. It was one of Which's top recommendations and I think the magazine was absolutely right.

Had my 'baby' for 5 years now and the coffee has been excellent. Provided you use it properly, it produces great espressos with lots of 'crema' and does a reasonable job of frothing the milk. Yes a machine with a second boiler would be more convenient but the extra 30s you have to wait for the espresso isn't very long really and emptying the drip tray once a week is not a problem either. Its starting to show some wear and tear but has been very reliable and made about 1,000 cups of high quality coffee, worth every penny!
