I was thrilled to find this little gem of a film. A lovely British black comedy filmed in the Old Ealing Style. Catherine Tate plays the part of Dorothy Ratcliffe the downtrodden wife of Frank (Iain Glen), an English teacher who takes his family to East Germany to follow his communist dream! Fighting to keep her family together amidst the chaos that unfolds Dorothy finds an inner strength. The talented cast includes the beautiful up and coming actress Brittany Ashworth, who plays the part of Dorothy's rebel teenage daughter Alex.

This film is wonderfully sent up, and in my opinion one the the best Brit Flicks to be released on DVD this year!

I loved this film and adored the sixties soundtrack

If the '60's were good to you or even if they weren't, this is a comedic but at times, dark look at "the other side of the fence" ...or Berlin Wall as it literally was. If nothing else this film proves "Utopia" means different things to different people. Finding it is never an easy thing and this attempt by a well meaning father to lead his family there, is part stark reminder but mostly comic catastrophe. Actually based on a true story, Iain Glen as the idealistic father, shows his versatility and is as wonderfully adept at comedy as he is a brilliant dramatic actor. Catherine Tate as the milch-toast mom who goes along with her husband and younger daughter's far fetched plan, is a gem. She accidentally becomes involved in helping East Germans escape to their "Utopia" - the west. Once she makes the decision to get her family out, with the Stasi hot on her trail, her husband oblivious to what she's been doing and even the elder daughter shaken from her rebellion, she proves to be the perfect person to try to lead this motley crew to safety. It's a dark comedy with an emphasis on the comedy of the absurdities that sometimes befall us despite, rather than because of our best efforts. This is a fun film well worth watching. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though be prepared for some pretty hideous polyester with equally revolting neon color patterns. (What were we thinking?)

Generally weak but with a few (and far between) laugh out moments. Surprised at Iain Glen being in this - a very good actor but coasting in this 'straight to video' effort. Catherine Tate is funnier in practically everything else she has done, although some of the support cast (they might be 'locals') are nicely fleshed out, especially the neighbour with the false leg. However, being filmed in Hungary there is a very authentic air to the setting and the sets and costumes (c.1968) evoke the period very well.

I was hoping for more from such a promising theme. I think from the talanted Katherine Tate something akin to Victoria Wood's outstanding Housewife 49.
Good story however with ideals of the grass is always greener for some not for all. and how Mrs R makes a decision after being caught up in husband's wake after coping with the changes to their lifstyle and adapting to privations. Film portrayes rather well how one person in partnership is occupied, rewarded and supported leaving other floundering.

Really enjoyed this film.
Do not understand why it's not more widely known compared to the dross that people turn up to watch at the cinema every day of the week.
Slight reservations about the ending .
