ZZ Top Rating
on 12 June 2009
Whole concert seemed to have been "staged" (excuse the pun). Gibbon's vocals were too digitized (note first song). Music sounded as if it had already been layered and mixed and the band were playing on top of this. The songs (allowing for variation on the guitar phrasing, no issues there) but they seemed to have lost their edge. For example, there was no comparison between the studio version of 'Blue Jean Blues' and this concert version. The whole show seemed to have been choreographed in advance and it just wasn't like their earlier concerts which had that more "raw" and natural feel to the playing.
I've known ZZ Top since I was a teenager and they're my favourite group. Billy Gibbons delivers a fantastic tone to his studio music and plays some really beautiful harmonies. I just felt this recording/concert doesn't do them justice. The fine balance between the early pre-80s ZZ Top natural sound and the modern ZZ Top digitized sound needs to be re-struck.
