Good initially, but not built to last
on 12 September 2012
I've had this bike for three years and while good in many ways I've been disappointed with the durability. I thought this review may be helpful to some people as I guess most reviews are written after a few weeks use.
There were many positives, I found the bike easy to assemble, solid and comfortable and it just seemed to work well, it was also fairly queit and smooth.
After around a year the bike started making the odd clicking sound, it didn't seem to effect use but was mildly irritating. This got gradually worse over time with the odd clunk here and there. The sound coming from the area between the pedals. Recently this has got much worse, there is now a permanent grinding and it seems harder to pedal, I've decided to ditch it and go for something new.
A couple of other problems, the belt came off a few times but I managed to work out why this was happening in the end and make a slight adjustment. Also a couple of months ago the bracket that holds on the handlebar started to break away from the front post where its welded, on the plus side York replaced the front post for £12 including postage which I thougt was reasonable, but I still wouldn't expect it to break.
Just to give an idea of use, over the first two years I used it off and on but I'd say on average 2 days a week for about 30 minutes at a time. Over the last year I've used it 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. I guess it could be argued I've had good use out of it but I'd still expect it to last longer, and its not really been right for about 18 months or more.
