Mastroianni really could turn his hand to any role. In this film he is a world-weary Sicilain nobleman, scheming to get rid of his wife, so that he can marry his attractive young cousin, played by Stefania Sandrelli. His solution? To make his wife commit adultery, so that he can kill her on the pretext that it is a crime of honour.
This is one of the great classics of Italian cinema, and I highly recommend it, especially to admirers of Mastroianni and Sandrelli. Also to anyone who is interested in Sicily. Lovers of the Montalbano Tv series might find some of the kinds of sets familiar!

Lovely performances from Marcello Mastroianni and the rest of the cast, gentle humour and a cutting disection of the code of manners of a traditional upper class macho italian catholic family. Lots of nice touches and beautifuly observed moments.

Despite the age of this film it is an excellent story of a man who plots to get rid of his wife so he can start dating his young cousin who he has fallen in love with.

The film has the option of English subtitles so if you are not put off by this it is a wonderful black comedy.

A nicely remastered version of this classic black comedy. Both picture and sound are clear. The audio language is Italian only, but then I'm not sure a dubbed English version of the film even exists. English, French and Italian subtitles are available, and they can be hidden if so desired.
