Oliver Nelson’s best work was with big bands, not this.
on 23 January 2015
The reputation of this album may be based on the tremendous first track alone. But the rest of the album though good is nothing special and can’t compare to albums like Wayne Shorter’s ‘JuJu’ or Coltrane’s ‘Giant Steps’ also from the early 60s. Oliver Nelson’s best work was with big bands, not this. Nelson is somewhat unjustly forgotten now but his talent as a writer and arranger put him right up there with the greats of big band jazz. Download the first track on this album and seek out ‘Fantabulous’ and ‘Kennedy Dream’ and his arranging for Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery and take it from there.
