Overweight or Overkill?
on 26 January 2013
I do really like the Omron BF400 Body Composition Monitor and Bathroom Scale. You can switch it on at the front (with your foot!) and press user number (if more than one person is using it) and it quickly works out your weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and your body fat percentage in a matter of seconds.
Despite this, what seemed like a good idea at the time, half feels like it's possible all a bit unnecessary - like overkill. Unless your BMI is dangerously high or low - I don't think we need to worry about these readings too much.
However, studies have shown that a high level of fat in the body, in particular visceral fat, increases the risk of developing more serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, so what's the harm in having all these extra details at hand?
Luckily, it does also have a 'weight only' setting for guests (or if you are in a hurry), where they can just step on and off without recording the details.
You do have to set it up so it knows the individual user's sex, age and height, as it stores memory for 4 people which is quite clever - and it's all relatively easy to do. In fact the whole scale is pretty clever in that the body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The BF400 sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue.Don't worry, this doesn't hurt! You don't even feel it!
