as a big fan of Susumu Yokota's hypnotic dreamlike music- i eventually bought this recently, essentially for one track - the rare earlier career deep lush ambient house track "Illusion River" which in a word is amazing. imagine a heaven sent mixture of hypnotic deep house beats combined with Yokota's deep ambient orientalsim + you've got it. the track is from his rare vinyl only "Will" deep house derived Lp. i must get that also! King Dragonfly is also featured on this compilatipon (from his extraordinary "Grinning Cat" lp) and uses similar deep lush beats. so good.

ultimately -the Skintone Collection (skintone being his own label) still contains many marvellous nuggets of the psyschedlic ambient lushness that this ex dj / musician specialises in. Wire magazine et al rightly highly rated Yokota over the years, but here the Skintone Collection does veer a little too safely towards the simpler ambient style + omits some of (for me ) his best darker work namely more tracks from Grinning Cat, the Boy and the Tree or Magic Thread. classics all.

a solid collection of Yokota's work for sure, but you need to buy or hear the three above mentioned cds for a better overview of what SY has achieved over the last decade or so.

This compilation is an ideal introduction to the classical/ambient world of Susumu Yakota, darling of late-night radio shows everywhere. The music drifts in and out, with piano lines meandering through rhythms not their own, and is never anything less than compelling. Although it draws heavily from a particular phase of the artist's work, it's a good indication of music found elsewhere, sometimes for much higher prices than the cost of this one.
