Hossein Alizadeh, not content with being a master tar & setar player, has also created two new specifications of stringed instrument to display his talents - firstly the shourangiz derived from the setar, and secondly the sallaneh, based on the barbat lute but adding more strings for adding lower harmonic tones.
It is the latter showcased here by Alizadeh, in four improvised solo pieces. I have to admit that it took me a little while to get into this. The sound is immediate and right in your face - the microphone even appears to be picking up the sound of Alizadeh's fingers moving along the fretboard at times. But sit back and let yourself be carried along on the changing moods of the sallaneh, and you will be rewarded.
