The spectacular Dame Edna Experience finally gets a UK DVD release some 20 years after it first aired. Two series of this sparkling gem were made between 1987 and 1989, totalling 14 shows. By this time, Dame Edna Everage was at the peak of her career as everybody's favourite Australian housewife-megastar and was joined on her chat show by a variety of superstar guests including Sean Connery, Charlton Heston, Jane Seymour, Lauren Bacall and Liza Minnelli. And then there are her "aborted" guests. The so-called probing interviews Dame Edna subjects each of her guests to are hilarious, the sets and costumes are pure O.T.T. glamour, and the proceedings are given a magnificent boost by Laurie Holloway and his orchestra. What made the series truly memorable was the presence of Dame Edna's "bridesmaid" Madge, a dowdy 80 year old woman who sits by her side at all times without ever uttering a word.

As spectacular as the series was, a word of warning to potential buyers though. The Network-DVD release that this is states that it is the "Complete Series" which is not the case as the 1989 Christmas Special ("The Dame Edna Satellite Experience") that ended series 2 is missing (fans of Ursula Andress, Yehudi Menuhin and Robert Kilroy-Silk will therefore be disappointed). For that reason, I am only giving this DVD release four stars (though the series itself is easily worth five). There is, however, the inclusion of the 1990 one-off Christmas Special "A Night On Mount Edna".

This massive collection is bound to bring chuckles to almost any audience. In fact the only people who might find Dame Edna too 'tame' probably delight in the toilet humour often masquerading as comedy these days. Yes, Dame Edna is dated. The series reflects a less commercial age. But it is fun (spelled FUN).

The measure of the importance of Dame Edna in her period can be seen in the level of guests who would come on her show: Sean Connery, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Mary Whitehouse, Charlton Heston and others. And her interviews are both revealing as well as funny.

All in all a great package of vintage comedy at a remarkable price. Great value.

I have only watched a few of these so far, I love the 80s decor the huge grey leather chair the guests sit upon, growing up through the 80s makes it more of a memory journey. The chit chat is squarely aimed at Dame Edna & I question why such big famous names were brough in only to be interupted, made fun of & to have such little time spent talking with them. Sean Connery seem to get a touch agrivated with Dame Edna with being made fun of at first before he realises its not a serious interview & then goes along with it. It is also funny when a "fake" guest is anouced then dropped down a shoot as they walk down the stairs on arrival. The look on the fellow guests faces is very funny, why Mary Whitehouse is on the show is also a tad confusing as surely it would be a program she would have not agreed with, yet she chats away as if starstruck with Dame Edna. It is still an interesting & humorous look back in time.
