I love this film. This is the third time I've seen it, and it's one of those films I can just see over and over again. It is extremely clever, and raises so many questions about media, and its influence on our perception of the world. It is even more relevant in this age of fake news. Jim Carrey is excellent.

If The Truman Show was real, would you tune in, day after day, to stare at Jim Carrey gurning his way through the same monotonous routine? The clown always warrants sympathy, even if you do occasionally want to kick him in the pants, so I guess it's not surprising he landed the role of the eponymous star of a TV show where everyone is performing except him; allegedly, because in fact his life is being controlled so he does lapse into saying and doing the same things again and again.

One isn't meant to focus on the implausibility of this diabolical conceit, but instead go away and question our own attitudes to television, advertising, political control, emotional manipulation, and just simply how we pass the time of day; and in that it succeeds admirably. In a way, the best thing would be to watch it, throw it away, run out the door and embrace real life, and not just because Truman/Carrey is kind of irritating.

What does bug me is that my copy of the Rough Guide To Film includes The Truman Show (1998), but not Pleasantville Pleasantville [DVD] [1999] which I would say is the better film about people living or rather wanting to live in an nostalgic contrivance (Truman's island is also reminiscent of the 1950s). There, two teens are magically zapped into the world of a b/w TV show called Pleasantville, and quickly they start to liberate the occupants from the stifling niceness of their daily smiley hellhole. Pleasantville doesn't submerge the essential nastinesses of the scenario as readily as The Truman Show.

Anyway, a clever satire on TV, Hollywood and the myths they perpetrate. It's a very thought-provoking film but maybe just a little too sugary.

A classic film.
Telling the story of Truman, a man who has lived his whole life as the star of a TV show and he doesn't even know....

This is one of Jim Carreys best performances with comedy and drama mixed perfectly together.

This film is a must have for any film lover's collection. The premise is that Truman (Jim Carrey) was born in a reality TV show and has grown up believing the set and actors around him is real life. The film joins him in his 30th year as he starts to suspect something might not be right with his world.

I love this film. It gets you thinking but it's funny and easy viewing. Recommended for anyone who hasn't seen it. If you don't like Jim Carrey you might well still like this as he's not too OTT in it!

Hollywood should have conceded the high ground and given Carrey an Oscar. If you haven't seen this yet, watch and you'll understand.
Film making of the highest calibre.

Really well thought out film with a good moral and ethical content. I find this next to 'Liar. Liar' one of his best.

Have wathced it about 5 times over the years and am still finding things I never saw before, well thought out...a great concept... I dont like Jim Carey normally as he is a bit too stupid and slapstick which suits Amarican tastes more than the English taste but this film is a keeper... a good "family fun" film for those who just skim the surface but look deeper and there some brilliant observations in this film...

Thumbs up from the other half too !
