Currently getting a lot of playing time on my deck at the moment is this astoundingly good album from underrated tenor man and Mingus big band member Wayne Escoffery.Recorded live at the Smoke club in New York it has all the spontaneous inspiration of a live set but with fantastic studio like sound quality.Joined by the intense Joe Locke on vibes,Hans Glawischnig on bass and Lewis Nash on drums this makes for fantastic listening. The music is definitely in the post bop vein with Escoffery working up,at times, a ferocious head of steam as he tears through the chord changes in contemporary post-bop style but never sacrificing musicality for pure aggression.Despite the advanced style of this music it always makes for enjoyable, exciting and engrossing listening with escoffery producing one of the best tenor performances in recent memory. Maybe there is an heir to the vacant "tenor king" throne with the untimely departure of Michael Brecker ?
"I waited for you" is probably the pick of the tracks with it's almost spirtual like melody.Theres a tip of the cap to his tutor and mentor Jackie Mclean with the longest track of the album "Melody for Melonae" which gets a faithfull reproduction. There is also a nice change of pace with "Tell me why" which is the only soprano track but still played with intensity and passion.
I could go on all day about how good this album is - but i won't - so just buy it.You'll thank me for the tip.
