In my book, this is Stephen Hough's best recording so far. Whereas he can sound too detached and cool in big pieces that require drama or a sense of narrative, he's fully at home in this collection. These pieces are brilliant little gems, and Hough's range of colour and nuanced dynamics is breathtaking, from Granados' Valses Poeticos (more scintillating than the famous Alicia de Larrocha version) to the Debussy selection to Hough's own mischievous and virtuosic encore.
The programming is perfect, and so is the playing - this is the kind of thing that Stephen Hough does best.
