A faithful interpretation, no doubt, but melodically a bit one dimensional
on 23 December 2015
Hmm. It is indeed folk and no doubt a faithful rendition. I've got all sorts of Christmas music and I'm pretty broad in my tastes, but my problem with it is simply that my ear is begging for harmonies and tunefulness and many songs just don't deliver that. Historically accurate maybe, but I like more tunefulness and joy in songs - especially when I know that there are banging melodies and harmonies just begging to be let out - whatever genre the songs are played in. I gave the album a good go but I can't listen to it all the way through - I will happily play portions of it from time to time as an antidote to my other festive albums, but in the end, too many songs are suffering from excessive austerity - worthy and well performed, but melodically too one dimensional for my taste. That said, I did appreciate the interpretation even if it wasn't my cup of tea.
