Ghoulies 2 was a load of rubbish so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this third movie in the franchise. It's low budget, sure, but I liked the characters and the Ghoulies themselves were extremely funny. Throw a young, hot Eva LaRue into the mix and you have yourself a very watchable and entertaining flick to watch on a rainy afternoon.

I actually use the term 'horror' very loosely when applying it to this movie, really it is just a camp, college movie with a horror element. The main plot doesn't really revolve around the funny little creatures, rather it focuses on the attempts of two rival gangs (the Gammas and the Betas) to out 'prank' each other and claim the much coveted 'pranking' crown. The Ghoulies do, however, provide some comical moments and some of the effects are entertaining.

It is hard to believe that this film was made in the nineties. It has a very dated mid-eighties feel to it, due to the use of directing and scripting styles that were popular during that era, as well as the use of gratuitous nudity, which has become expected of films within this category. These are not complaints, they actually make the movie watchable. After all, the eighties was the decade which invented this genre and to present it in any other format just wouldn't fit. The acting is probably also slightly better than one would normally expect fom such a movie, but then again, the script provides no particular challenges.

There are similarities to movies such as Critters and Gremlins, but Ghoulies never comes close to achieving the same standards. That's not to say that it isn't worth watching, just don't expect too much, and if you enjoy silly films, such as Troma's offerings then you will undoubtedly enjoy this. If you can get it cheap, then this is overall, a fun movie to have in your collection.

Ghoulies 3 - Ghoulies Go To College [1990]

GHOULIES 3: GHOULIES GO TO COLLEGE is without a doubt the best in the franchise. The original was good, the sequel was awesome. But this is the most entertaining. The GHOULIES themselves can actualy talk in this installment so they're wisecracking all over the place. It's prank week at college and two rival gangs are in a battle to witn the pranking crown. Proffessor Ragnar wants to put a stop to all these crazy antics. So he calls upon the GHOULIES to do his dirty work for him.

Humour and horror is always a great combination and always will be. This is the GHOULIES film that stands out. Shame about GHOULIES 4 though. Not good!

This edition of the Ghoulies films is by far the best. You don't need to have seen any of the other two films. As this doesn't really follow on from them. So can be bought and watched without see the first two.

Ghoulies three is a very funny horror comedy. That has everything you want from something of this type of film. Silly pranks, scary moments and the usual beautiful women. Of course you aren't going to get world class special effects or acting. What you do get though is good entertainment from a cast and crew who knew this was never going to win a oscar. So don't take it all too seriously.
