An old recording which has been sensitively remastered and with good reason - the Busch quartet bring an intensity to their interpretation and a richness of tonal quality that is peerless. These quartets are of course masterpieces, astonishing works which rank with Beethoven's output in the medium. Death and the Maiden is the more famous, and with its dramatic opening movement and the unfolding journey of the second movement variations, it is a wonderful piece, though surpassed by the D887, a bigger and more ambitious work. The Busch quartet bring an affinity with the music that even surpasses my excellent vinyl recording by the Amadeus quartet. I now intend to get their Beethoven cycle to see whether they can match or even better, the masterly and now sadly discontinued Hungarian quartet interpretation.
The Busch quartet seem to me to be in a league of their own. These recordings are utterly sublime and I can only recommend them most earnestly. If you have not sampled their Beethoven also then you have not lived !!!
