The owner of a record shop in downtown Detroit has the surname Battle and his shop was on Hastings Street. Here he runs a recording facility for anyone who pays him around $10 per side.
Few names are going to ring any bells and the singer named as Johnny Wright is not the same guy who married Kitty Wells as like everyone else here these are black singers who never troubled a chart too much.Probably CDs like this aren't going to see too much cash register action either-these are for collectors and Ace probably make enough money from their other associated labels like Chiswick to subsidize the more "out there" music
Its raw all right-beautifully shambolic and never more so than Johnny Howard's Vacation Blues where the band struggle to agree on the right chords and end up hitting a load of wrong ones. But the whole glorious murk somehow makes it into a classic of Shambolism that only America could think up
Hence the wonderfully named Battle of Hastings Street. You got to love it
