Great on-line, crap single player
on 21 March 2007
First, the positive. The on-line game is excellent.
Second, the confused. Now, I appreciate that an energy bar is not a completely life-like way of recording the damage that one might sustain in combat. But what on Earth is going on in this game?! If you get wounded, you just have to hide for a few seconds to be fully healed. This mechanic would be fine in a sci-fi game, but this is supposed to be a realistic WWII game.
Thirdly, the griping. The single player is rubbish. The other guys in your squad don't advance unless you do. If they're pinned down by a machine gun and you clear the machine gun out, they still won't advance unless you cross some sort of point or marker. Also, the scripted events will really annoy you. For example, in one level, you have some tank support helping you out when suddenly an enemy with an anti-tank gun pops up. No matter how many times you kill that ant-tank gunner, another will spawn in his place to destroy your tank. There's nothing you can do about it. Again, we lose some points to realism. Finally, the fact that (with one or two very small exceptions) there is only one route through each level means no searching around and finding stuff out for yourself. A bit boring and repetitive to be honest.
But, most of what I wrote is pointless as you'll be buying this (and playing it over and over) for the multi-player game. Probably the best (if not the most realistic) multi-player FPS on the PC today!
