slow and almost a burden to reach the end

This book is the final book in the series, after Fortress in the Eye of Time, Fortress of Eagles and Fortress of Owls. In this book, all of the plots and treasons from the previous books come to fruition. Enemies exist all around, and Tristen must help Cefwyn, lest all be lost. Action, magic, and dark deeds abound.
Like the previous book in this series, this book contains a prologue to remind the reader of the story so far, and lexicon describing all of the people and places in the story. The story is exciting, keeping you on the edge of your seat until the final conclusion. The ending was somewhat abrupt, but the lose ends means that there may yet be more stories to follow!

This book ends the series started with Fortress in the eye of time. In this book Tristan comes to terms with what he is and what it is that he must do so that his friend, the king survives the coming conflict. It is a well written book that possibly leaves room for more to be written in this world.

All the Tristram books are brilliant and after discovering the first one I sent off for all of them. They're not your average sci-fi fantasy fiction, as Cherryh makes you work quite hard, but they're all the more rewarding for that.

Tristan's epic journey of self discovery continues to unfold as he tries to protect the people he loves in this well written, fast paced, fantasy.
