I wish I could speak learnedly about the pieces here. I can't. I will say that this disc to me is a masterpiece of precision and yet emotion too. A very well considered program-- the Berg songs (fairly rarely recorded I believe) are a quiet revelation to me, and the 'early Romantic' Schubert and 'late Romantic' Wolf ones are an interesting contrast. Stotijn was student of Dame Janet Baker, and in her expressiveness it shows, if her voice not 'pressing' towards contralto which Baker can do (by that I mostly mean timbre of voices is somewhat different) . But akin in drama and
expression, which as a big fan of Baker, is high praise from me. Breinl is also a very deft and sensitive accompanist and his playing is virtuoso without showing off, and I love the way they interact. If you like German lieder, I think you'll like this one.
