I first heard Anna Caterina on a recording of Rodelina which she performed with William Christie at Glyndebourne some years ago. She literally blew me away then, with a beautiful full tone combined with great understanding of the reportoire, not necessarily what you would expect from ostensibly a mainstream big name in opera. I'm glad that modern day performances of Handel can be both musical and authentic, and this is exactly what she achieves with this recording. Of course the Italian is communicated cleanly, and the main piece 'Il Combattimento...' she manages to delineate the three parts successfully, and imbue what could be repetitive sounding extended recitative with feeling and real drama. I can only say that if you have the opportunity to see her sing this live, and I have twice both in London, go go go. She is extraordinary, very musical and in my view one of the best sopranos around.
