TOP 500 REVIEWERon 2 September 2017
This review for the Sony Home Ent. DVD. There may be some confusion (on my part) about the ratio My copy is definitely 16.9 ratio (fills my whole screen), and in places looks just a bit cropped. The case and other reviewers state Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1. I am no expert on ratios but I remain somewhat confused. The DVD is otherwise a good transfer, good colour and sound and Optional English Subtitles. The film is by no means Ford's best In fact you might be hard pressed to find any of his trademarks. To me it seemed as if he didn't bother directing Stewart at all, and let him ramble on at his most annoying (actually I do normally like him!). Widmark comes off well, but their long almost ad lib dialogue by the river bank is most unusual. Ford also lets most of his stock company overact to the point of laughter - Ken Curtis repirses his role of Charlie McCrory (sic) from "The Searchers" and other guilty parties include Harry Carey, Willis Bouchey and Jeanette Nolan. Retaining some dignity are John McIntyre and surprisingly, stuntman Cliff Lyons. I know many regard this film as a misunderstood Ford semi classic, and of course it has its moments, quite a few in fact, and I am glad I have seen it after quite a few years. It most certainly is not all bad tho I do seem to give that impression. Many will love it

Not a classic Fordian western, it is a modern western similar to those ones directed in the 60's and 70's, I think Guthrie McCabe is one of stewart's best characters and his rebirth as a human being begins with the rescue of Elena de la Madriaga

though I do not consider this to be a great western I do find it an entertaining watch, and with James Stewart and Richard Widmark you can't go far wrong. another great addition to the Eureka masters of cinema collection.

James Stewart made many western films, and this one is a very enjoyable comedy. Well worth watching!
