more than amazing, yet...
on 16 January 2007
Like most people who love movie soundtracks and/or the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I adore the soundtrack written for the three LOTR films. I also bought the trilogy soundtrack box set as soon as it came out, a few years ago. This box set, however included only the original soundtracks.
Now that this majestic box set appears, I feel cheated. Again, because the same thing happened with the movies being released on DVD, with newer and supposedly better versions coming out every 2 years it seems? I fully acknowledge the sheer genius of this soundtrack. But I can't give it more than 3 stars for the sole reason that the whole industry built around Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is going too far in my humble opinion. People who fell in love with these films and the soundtracks are constantly asked to pay up for the newest version of a release. Forced would be a better word. THere are a lot of people out there who are willing to pay to own the "ultimate collection" (if even there's ever going to be such a thing).. and the record company/producers/... know it.
So this is basically a plea for more transparency about what releases they are working on, even when another release has only just reached stores.
So: brilliant soundtracks without many -if any- flaws. The art work is also a feast for the eyes. But a shame that I had to pay for something that I already owned snippets of in the original soundtracks. Such a pity..
