Gergiev always delivers with Tchaikovsky. A good value set.

What do you get when you mix Russian aggression with Viennese smoothness? You achieve the perfect blend that makes this recording of the last three symphonies so appealing. Valery Gergiev brings huge insight to the interpretation of Tchaikovsky. Each CD is only about 45 minutes long, but this is much better than cramming all the symphonies onto 2 CDs and having to change CDs to hear the completion of one of the symphonies. Highly recommended

I have owned this set for a good few years now, and there cannot be high enough praise for Gergiev's rendition of the 3 masterpieces in this pack.
the 4th is magnificently played, the 5th stunning beyond compare and the 6th has never had a better playing. I've listened to dozens of recordings of the 'Pathetique' and this comes out top (Solti with Chicago SO 2nd). Gergiev is often referred to as the greatest living Tchaikovskian and this recordings show why.The Wiener Philharmoniker don't play with the usual string sound, it has got at times a harsh edge (and grunts from Gergiev) but it is all the better for it. There are moments of tenderness in the final movement of the 6th symphony and it adds to a magnificent playing and interpretation. the 6th symphony was performed live after the Beslan massacre and it is obvious that Gergiev is thinking of it, producing an amazing performance.

Having listened to this on a top sound system, iPod and laptop, it is most stunning playing direct through the cd. However, I believe on an iPod it is still effective as a listening experience.

This set is probably the best use ever of my money and will give me pleasure for years if not decades to come.

It may not be to everyone's taste (nothing ever is) and not all the moments are perfect for my taste, but I don't think there is a better set out there of the late symphonies.

Gergiev cannot conduct Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony to save his life. Why does Gergiev have to drag the music out and slur the line breaking the flow of the music by always slowing down almost to a halt (which is not in the score) and then suddenly speed up for the 'fast bits'? The opening of the first movement just sounds so static, laboured and mannered and self -indulgent - and even more self-indulgent than Bernstein and that's saying something. To ensure that he received a rapturous applause, Gergiev speeds things up in the closing passages (yet still manages to 'milk' the closing bars for cheap effect making the music sound mannered.

Gergiev's sensationalist renditions of the 4th and 6th Symphonies of Tchaikovsky are equally as mannered and turgid and sluggish as the 5th with the VPO playing far too politely and polished, perfumed and manicured, silky and streamlined and all smoothed out; the VP) just cannot play Tchaikovsky (as was blatantly evident when Maazel recorded the Tchaikovsky Symphonies with the VPO years ago).

This is without doubt the most STUPENDOUS version of Tchaikovsky's Symphonies 4,5,and 6 ever produced. The Finale of the 5th Symphony is the Best I have ever heard. The Conductor Valery Gergiev and Orchestra - the BRILLIANT Vienna Philharmonic, transport the listener into what I can only describe as Heaven on Earth.Listen and prepare for the tingling in the spine, the lump in the throat, and yes, the tears! When the listener has come back down to earth, there is only one thing to do - play it all again, and turn the volume up another notch or two.The Timpani are simply unforgettable,as is the Magnificent Brass. Buy and Rejoice!!
