I really want to give this 5 stars...
on 7 May 2006
My first reactions were entirely positive. The player looks good, is a good size and weight, with a good, clear screen, a logical easy-to-use menu and the sound quality is excellent. I was impressed with the headphones (allowing me time to save for some really good ones rather than having to splash out straight away), and the range of EQ options is impressive and, on the whole, useful. Throw in a couple of games for the tube, and the option to upload pictures, video and other files, as well as radio (although it isn't all that good) and recording, and you have an excellent product.
Unfortunately, I have experienced problems with the player in the time I have had it. Initially certain files would not play on it. I contacted Samsung, who advised me that I needed to upgrade the firmware to make it MTP-ready. So far so reasonable. Once I had done this, however, I quickly found that the speed it took to upload music became incredibly slow (taking several minutes eventually to complete an album). Once I had uploaded music, I also found that the Library on the player was malfunctioning, and the newest music was there, but the stuff I already had on there was not (although the music itself was there). The library came to bear little resemblance to the Media Centre list - songs I had tried to delete were still there, and music was not accessible even though I knew it was on the player somewhere.
So I sent the player back to the Repair Centre; quick turnaround, freepost address, but when I got it back I found the library contained a random selection of Tom Jones, Mariah Carey - songs I had not loaded on to my PC, let alone the player. Anyway, suffice to say that I still have not managed to get the library to tally with the contents of the player. It has gone back a second time to no avail. I have concluded that the only way to get music on there is to avoid the software provided and just use My Computer. This still does not address the library issues, but it at least keeps the file arrangements I have on my PC.
Samsung won't change the player, but instead have said they will continue to keep 'repairing' it. Disappointing, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd be interested to hear them...
