What a wonderful score this is! The complete Checkmate ballet music has so many interesting ideas and startling moments. There is a good deal of music here that didn't make it into the more familiar and shorter suite. The 'Entry of the Red King & Queen' is a case in point: a short but highly imaginative episode that harkens back to the heraldic feel of 'Purple' from the composer's Colour Symphony. Bliss knew he'd composed some of his very best music in this score and wisely re-cycled some of it in his music for the film 'Things To Come'. The Melee Fantasque, an attractive early orchestral work, makes up a bargain Bliss offering of the highest quality.
Of course it's brilliant - just a pity that the BBC which did record a performance of Checkmate in the 1960s (monochrome) for BBCTV - I saw it - has never digitised the film (too early for tape?) for release on DVD. I wish it would - are you listening BBC!!
