Safer Than Screen Mounting Your Satnav - Plus, Some Helpful Tips For Reliable Attachment!
on 17 March 2015
I bought these in order to attach my Garmin 2598 LMT-D to the dash of my Saab and they work extremely well. A few negative reviews here state that these are not genuine Garmin product - I think it's likely they opted to purchase from a Marketplace seller. The discs I received directly from Amazon were indeed fully branded and entirely genuine black 63mm wide discs in original Garmin packaging. Order from a reliable source to avoid fakes.
Before you apply them I have a few tips for you:
1. Locate your ideal mounting position before removing the tape! Find what works & looks best.
2. Carefully clean & dry the surface - silicone dashboard polish is fatal here and must be completely removed before applying.
3. Thoroughly warm the glue pad with a hairdryer.
4. Apply disc with firm pressure and keep pressing for a minute or two while it bonds.
5. Allow a day before using the mount - the bond gains significant strength overnight.
I was initially uncertain that my satnav would be securely held, given some feedback here, but with good preparation it's as solid as a rock, and cannot be prized off again with my fingers. What I will point out though is that many dashboard surrounds are made out of a dense passenger friendly foam covered by vinyl. With a heavy satnav mounted this allows a very slight flex. Driving over a bumpy road creates noticeably more shake in your satnav screen than it being mounted to the windscreen so be prepared for that if you have hard suspension and travel on rutted minor roads a lot. Normal users will be fine, and I've only noticed shake twice, and that was on horribly potholed roads..
Having switched from mounting my satnav on the windscreen to this dash mount I would not choose to go back - the line of site of the satnav is now below the bottom of the windscreen so my road vision is not impaired, and I also have no ugly dangling cable. It's just neater and much safer all round, with one less blind spot. If you own a car with a flat fascia on the dash you could easily stick one of these on vertically - the Garmin mount is such that it will accommodate a wide range of angles. Overall then an effective product and a recommended purchase! Like I say, if you buy the genuine Garmin product and prep the dash carefully these will prove completely reliable.
