A classic bit of 1970's history
on 16 February 2018
This is a bit of classic 1970s history, very much in the 1960s/70s style.
The lead track Driver's Seat has a very definite magic, with hints and flavours borrowed from several of the classic greats of the time, all put together brilliantly and yet economically to give it its own unique identity. Even though four minutes long it's one of those tracks that finishes a bit too soon...
The rest of the CD does not quite measure up to this one hit, but is still a good nostalgia trip for us oldies. When considering that it was first recorded in one day after a single rehearsal a few days earlier in the mid 1970s with a pick-up assemblage of personnel, it is amazingly well balanced and taut. The sleeve notes tell us just enough.
This remastered version of Driver's Seat seems a bit clinical compared with the original I heard on the radio the other day, but then that might have been the transmission compressing it and degrading the quality.
